In this article we take a look at some of the most expensive transfer in the history of football. This list includes names like Cristiano Ronaldo, Philippe Coutinho, Neymar Jr., Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba, and Gareth Bale. These players were bought for huge sums of money.

10. James Rodriguez – €79.8m

James Rodriguez is number ten on our list. He achieved this after an impressive 2014 world cup which saw him win the golden boot and also help his team to reach the quarter-finals. After one year at Monaco he arrived at Real Madrid for a fee of €79.8m which made him the most expensive Colombia transfer ever. He is the third most expensive player for Real Madrid behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale who are also in the list.

9. Luiz Suarez – €82.3m

After an incredible final year at Liverpool which was him win the English golden boot and helped Liverpool to qualifier for the champions league in a while and also come close to the Premier League title in 2013-2014, Luiz Suarez became a target for many clubs in the 2014 transfer window. Barcelona would eventually snap the talismanic striker for €82.3m, after being handed a four-mouth ban for biting an Italian defender while representing Uruguay at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

8. Romelu Lukaku – €83m

After spells at English clubs such as Chelsea, West Brom, and Everton, Romelu Lukaku announced he would not be extending his stay at Goodison Park in May, putting many of Europe’s biggest clubs on the alert. But the Belgian joined Manchester United for a fee of €83m, after scoring 25 league goals for Everton in the 2016-2017 season.

7. Virgil Van Dijk – €84.5m
As the most expensive defender of all time, Virgil Van Dijk was signed by Liverpool for a record fee of €84.5m from Southampton. He proved his worth by scoring the winning goal for Liverpool in the Merseyside derby on his debut.

6. Gonzalo Higuain – €90m

After leaving La Liga giants Real Madrid for Serie A side Napoli the Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain made huge thrives which made him break a 66-year old Serie A record for most goals in a single season, netting 36 times. This made Juventus approach Napoli with €90m for his services, after they had lost Paul Pogba to Manchester United. Higuain also topped the charts as the most expensive transfers in Italian history.

5. Cristiano Ronaldo – €94m

In an impressive six years at Manchester United, which was him win three Premiership titles, an FA Cup, and the Champions League in 2008. He also won his first Ballon d’Or at the club. He also scored 118 goals for Manchester United. Before La Liga giants Real Madrid offered a then world-record fee of €94m for the Portuguese.

4. Gareth Bale – €100m

Another record fee of €100m from the La Liga giants Real Madrid gave Tottenham no option but to let Gareth Bale go to the Santiago Bernabeu. Gareth Bale set the Premier League alight for Tottenham, with clubs like Manchester United rumored to have been wanting to sign from Tottenham. But he chose to join Los Blancos.

After leaving Manchester United for Juventus in the summer of 2012 for a free transfer. Paul Pogba developed into one of the best midfielders in the game, becoming a hot prospect for clubs. When Manchester United decided to bring back the French midfielder to Old Trafford, Juventus asked a then world record fee of €105m for the French international.

Ousmane Dembele a great promising footballer is number three on the list. He was spotted by German giants Borussia Dortmund whiles playing for Rennes in France. He attracted interest from Spanish giants Barcelona after they lost Neymar Jr. to P.S.G. He cost the Spanish giants an impressive €105m. He was the most expensive transfer of 2017, he is also the second most expensive player for Barcelona. He is now a regular for the French national team. 

2. Philippe Coutinho – €120m

Philippe Coutinho, the Brazilian star cost Barcelona €120m. His transfer is one of the most shocking January transfer of all-time. In January 2018 Liverpool confirmed that they had reached an agreement with Barcelona. His transfer fee could rise to £142 million with various clauses being met. Liverpool made over £100m profit on the player.



1. Neymar Jr. – €220m

After Neymar sign a contract extension with Barcelona, no one imagined he will leave the club. But PSG had other ideas, activating Neymar’s €222 million release clause, entitling them to bypass the Barcelona board and speak directly to the player about a possible transfer to the French capital. However, after negotiation Neymar’s move was finalised and he became PSG’s new No. 10, he also became the most expensive transfer in the history of the sport by an incredible amount of €220m.
